Benefits of Installing a Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioner or Heat Pump

Energy Savings
Ductless air conditioners are more energy-efficient than window air conditioners. And, you avoid the energy losses common in the ductwork of forced air HVAC systems.

Better Temperature Control
Installing ductless heating and cooling allows you to control the temperature in different areas of your home individually. This keeps temperatures more even and reduces energy waste.

Expandable
You can easily add more ductless mini-splits for climate control in multiple parts of your home.

Prolong Your HVAC System’s Lifespan
And if a ductless system is used to supplement a central air conditioner and furnace, it can help reduce wear and tear on the central heating & cooling system because it won’t have to work as hard to keep those hard-to-cool rooms comfortable.

Long-Lasting
Ductless mini-split air conditioners and heat pumps have a lifespan of about 20 years.

What Is a Ductless Mini-Split System?

As the name implies, a ductless mini-split system is essentially an air conditioner or heat pump that provides heating or cooling directly to one room or area of a building without any ductwork. Ductless systems are usually mounted to an exterior wall with the condenser and compressor on the outside and the blower, or air handler, on the inside. Electrical wiring and refrigerant tubing runs between the indoor unit and the outdoor unit. Some models are available with Wifi for remote control.

Ductless systems provide heating and cooling for a room addition, sunroom, converted garage and other areas without the high installation costs of adding ductwork for a forced air system. As a MidAmerican EnergyAdvantage Partner, Aspen Aire is qualified to install ductless mini-split systems that qualify for MidAmerican Energy’s rebate program.

Types of Ductless Mini-Splits

Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioner

A ductless air conditioner provides cooling with no ductwork required. You can cool multiple zones with one ductless AC unit. A ductless air conditioner is a quieter, longer-lasting, energy-efficient alternative to a window AC unit. Ductless mini-split air conditioners use less energy than window air conditioners, they won’t block your windows, and some units can provide both heating and cooling.

Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump

A ductless heat pump provides both heating and cooling without the need for ductwork. You can control the temperature of individual rooms without adjusting the thermostat for your central heating and air conditioning system. And, ductless mini-split heat pumps usually have higher Energy Star ratings than central HVAC system, which helps you save energy.

FAQs

Can I install a ductless mini split myself?

Ductless systems are best installed by a professional HVAC contractor. Even though they’re not as difficult to install as a central HVAC system, there are still electrical lines and refrigerant lines that need to be run between the indoor air handler and the outdoor condenser unit.

Do mini-splits have to be on an outside wall?

The outdoor unit of a ductless mini-split system is usually installed on an exterior wall, but in some cases there are other options that could work. For example, the outdoor unit could be placed on a concrete pad or a stand on the ground.

Where should you not install a mini-split?

The indoor unit of a ductless mini-split system should not be installed on an interior wall, near a heat source, anywhere airflow will be blocked, or in areas of high humidity like a bathroom or laundry room. The outdoor unit shouldn’t be installed in direct sunlight, near flammable materials, areas with poor airflow, or locations where snow might accumulate and block the unit’s drain.
